The Lobo or gray wolf of the American southwest has recently been reintroduced in some areas. Though most authorities believed it to be extinct in the wild prior to reintroduction, I am one of those who have some evidence to the contrary. Although they are very rare, I believe there are still some holdouts among the original wild population. Gray wolves have never been anything but a rare sighting in the American southwest since the 1930s becoming less and less in the time since then. I remember seeing several in the wild in far southern New Mexico in 1961. I also examined two that were shot and killed in Brewster Co. Texas near Big Bend in 1977 or 1978. | ||
